Protecting Against Viral Infections Through Prevention and Treatment

Vaccines and antiviral medications are key tools in the fight against viral infections. At virology.lk, we provide accurate, up-to-date guidance on the vaccines available in Sri Lanka, and the antiviral medications used in treatment and prevention of serious viral diseases.

Why Vaccination Matters

Vaccines help prevent serious illness, complications, and outbreaks caused by viruses. In Sri Lanka, several vaccines are part of the national immunization program, while others are given based on risk or exposure.

Common Viral Vaccines in Sri Lanka:

  • Hepatitis B vaccine – part of infant immunization and for healthcare workers
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) – routine childhood vaccine
  • Japanese Encephalitis (JE) – given in endemic regions
  • COVID-19 vaccines – available for all age groups
  • Rabies vaccine – post-exposure and pre-exposure for high-risk individuals
  • Influenza vaccine – recommended for elderly, pregnant women, and high-risk groups
  • HPV vaccine – offered to school-aged girls

Always check with your MOH or family physician for the recommended schedule and availability.

What Are Antivirals?

Antivirals are medications that treat or control viral infections. While not all viruses have specific treatments, certain high-risk or chronic infections can be managed effectively with antivirals.

Common Antiviral Medications Used in Sri Lanka:

  • Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) – for Influenza
  • Acyclovir / Valacyclovir – for herpes virus infections (HSV, VZV)
  • Tenofovir, Entecavir – for chronic Hepatitis B
  • Sofosbuvir combinations – for Hepatitis C
  • Remdesivir – for hospitalized COVID-19 cases
  • Antiretrovirals (ARVs) – for HIV/AIDS management

These medications are prescribed under medical supervision. Do not self-medicate.

When to Seek Expert Advice

  • After exposure to rabies, hepatitis B, measles, or COVID-19
  • If you are pregnant or immunocompromised
  • When starting antivirals for chronic viral infections
  • Before traveling abroad

Consult a virologist or infectious disease specialist when in doubt.
